Highlights

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE above an elevation of 7,500 feet and MODERATE below that elevation. Soft surface slabs lie upon old snow surfaces formed during the most recent drought period. These slabs are likely to be human triggered on steep avalanche prone slopes and have the potential to step down to deeper layers of weak faceted snow. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully and avoid areas of concern.

Humans who venture onto steep slopes that have not experienced recent avalanche activity could trigger large slab avalanches that fail on persistent weak layers of faceted snow. These slabs could have depths of two to five feet and could fail to the ground in some areas.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Western Wyoming will remain cold and cloudy with areas of light snowfall that will increase during the day on Monday. The higher elevations are expected to receive an inch of new snow overnight, three inches during the day and four inches Monday night. Temperatures will remain in the single digits and teens. Winds will be light from the southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour.Soft surface slabs comprised of the recent new snow can be human triggered with crowns depths of one to three feet. In areas with poor snowpack structure these slabs could involve older snow with depths to five feet. These deeper persistent slabs are more likely to be triggered in the Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass and Southwest Trails/ Greys River areas where the general avalanche hazard is forecast to be CONSIDERABLE. The general avalanche hazard in the Teton Range is forecast to be MODERATE.
