Highlights

Unstable conditions continue to pose a threat to people who are recreating in avalanche terrain. Sunshine and warm temperatures will increase the hazard as the day progresses. Yesterday a slab avalanche fully buried one snowmobiler and partially buried another in the Salt River Range. In the Teton Range a skier was caught and swept to the edge of a cliff. On Thursday another skier was caught and partially buried in the same area. None of these events resulted in an injury. On Monday a snowmobiler was seriously injured after being caught and partially buried by an avalanche in the Salt River Range. Similar events are likely today and could result in serious injury or death. Excellent terrain evaluation skills and conservative terrain choices are essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain today.

    DANGEROUS unstable slabs up to four feet in depth lie upon buried layers of weak faceted snow. These slabs are can be easily triggered by humans who venture onto or beneath steep slopes and could release naturally. The potential for avalanches to occur will increase as air temperatures warm and sunshine heats up suspect terrain. Some steep slopes may be crossed multiple times before a weak spot is encountered and the slope fails.
