Highlights

Conditions are generally safe where snowpack surfaces are frozen hard, and large avalanches are unlikely. As the day warms up, small loose snow avalanches could occur on very steep slopes. Continue to exercise normal backcountry caution & give terrain near or under cornices a wide buffer.

Dust on crust(s)! Today's small storm brought 0-3" of new snow to the Snake, Salt, and Wyoming Ranges, accompanied by light to moderate northwesterly winds. This wasn't enough to appreciably change the avalanche danger, and the rating has remained at Low. Below is a list of conditions that you could encounter today, especially if your backcountry adventures take you to steep, consequential terrain:

  • Be aware that the snow beneath surface crusts may still be wet. Conditions over the past 48 hours have trended cooler and cloudier. Last evening bode well for a harder refreeze than we have had in days; this should create a firm crust on almost every aspect and at every elevation. 
  • Loose snow avalanches. Moving forward, any new snow will fall on top of slick crusts that exist pretty much everywhere. Today's forecasted colder temperatures should help the new snow to glue on to these crusts, but in areas of higher snow accumulation, you may encounter relatively small sluffs. These could occur naturally as the day progresses—pay attention to the terrain above you.
  • Fresh wind slabs. Small, isolated slabs could exist on firm surfaces by late today. These will be most common in upper elevation terrain and fairly easy to identify. 

Use extra caution around cornices, which have grown large thanks to a very snowy February. Many observers have noticed cracks near larger cornices where these beasts are peeling away from steep ridgelines.
