Highlights

Two substantial avalanches occurred yesterday in the Tetons. In steep, wind loaded avalanche prone terrain above 8,500 feet, skiers and riders could trigger small to large, dense wind slabs. Daytime warming will increase the likelihood of triggering these slabs and also bring about the possibility of shallow wet loose slides. Significant avalanche activity is unlikely below 8,500 feet. Get an early start, monitor warming conditions and solar input, and be willing to alter your travel plans if conditions warrant.

    The mountains have received up to a foot of dense snow since last weekend. Southwesterly to northerly ridgetop winds have accompanied this snowfall, and dense wind slabs with depths of 6 to 18 inches have formed in leeward terrain above 8,500 feet. Skiers and riders could trigger these slabs on steep, avalanche prone slopes. Warming temperatures and periods of sunshine will make these slabs more susceptible to failure as the day progresses. Be particularly wary of long, sustained couloirs.

Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the mid-teens before rising to near 30 during the day. Tonight, the valleys will drop to near 20 before climbing into the low 40s in the afternoon. Southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will range from 5 to 15 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate above 9,000 feet on Saturday morning. Temperatures are forecasted to be around five degrees warmer than Friday, and Considerable hazard could develop in the Tetons if mostly sunny skies dominate.
