Highlights

Danger will start as Low this morning but it will increase throughout the day with incoming snow. By this afternoon, you will be able to trigger soft slab avalanches that are up to a foot deep on steep slopes. Heavy snowfall, the wind blowing snow, and cracking in the new snow are all signs that steep slopes are becoming unstable. If you note these things, start to dial back your terrain choices.

    A weather system is forecasted to deliver 4 to 10 inches of snow with light winds blowing from the southwest. Temperatures are forecasted to rise throughout the day and in many places new snow is falling on a weak snow surface or a crust. Avalanches failing within the new snow will be possible by the end of the day. I am thinking of them in 3 different categories:

    • Avalanches failing at the new snow/old snow interface. They will be 4 to 10 inches deep and could fail on weak snow or crusts. Cracking, small avalanches on convex slopes and upside down feeling snow are signs that steep slopes may have become unstable.
    • Wind slab avalanches on exposed terrain features where wind speeds are higher than the forecast predicts. Ridglines, mountain passes, and steep exposed gullies are most suspect. If you feel slabby upside down snow, see the wind transporting snow, or experience cracking around your skis retreat and find a lower angle route
    • Dry loose avalanches or sluffs could happen in very steep terrain where the snow surface lacks cohesion. 

    Avalanches today are not expected to be very large, but could break wider than expected and big enough to knock you off your feet by the end of the day. If the weather intensifies, expect danger to be on the rise.

Avalanche Discussion

Weak snow that formed in mid January sits below a couple inches of snow that fell after January 23rd. This has the potential to act as a weak layer and produce avalanches. It probably won’t be today, but with more snow on the way, it could be an issue soon.

In some places, snow that fell on 1/23 preserved the weak snow underneath. In some places, the new snow and wind disturbed the old snow surface but still fell on 10 inches of weak faceted snow, and in other places the old snow was so disrupted that it fell on generally hard cohesive snow. What I am getting at is that there is a lot of variability in what is now buried underneath the soft snow surface that we see today. This may make it difficult to nail down exactly where these avalanches will occur. Whenever there is uncertainty, it is best to give potentially suspect terrain a wide berth until a better picture of the details is painted. For now, we know that this weak snow exists above 7,500’ up to around 9,500’ on aspects facing west to north to east in terrain that did not get hammered by winds. Keep this on your radar as we move forward.
