A weather system is forecasted to deliver 4 to 10 inches of snow with light winds blowing from the southwest. Temperatures are forecasted to rise throughout the day and in many places new snow is falling on a weak snow surface or a crust. Avalanches failing within the new snow will be possible by the end of the day. I am thinking of them in 3 different categories:
- Avalanches failing at the new snow/old snow interface. They will be 4 to 10 inches deep and could fail on weak snow or crusts. Cracking, small avalanches on convex slopes and upside down feeling snow are signs that steep slopes may have become unstable.
- Wind slab avalanches on exposed terrain features where wind speeds are higher than the forecast predicts. Ridglines, mountain passes, and steep exposed gullies are most suspect. If you feel slabby upside down snow, see the wind transporting snow, or experience cracking around your skis retreat and find a lower angle route
- Dry loose avalanches or sluffs could happen in very steep terrain where the snow surface lacks cohesion.
Avalanches today are not expected to be very large, but could break wider than expected and big enough to knock you off your feet by the end of the day. If the weather intensifies, expect danger to be on the rise.
