Highlights

On some steep avalanche prone slopes, the potential for snowmobilers to trigger large slab avalanches is still a concern. Five am air temperatures are similar to yesterday morning. Today's winds will be light. Clear skies and temperatures in the 20's have allowed snow surfaces to freeze overnight. Those snow surfaces will soften as the day warms and increase the wet snow avalanche hazard. Wet slides are possible on steep slopes and banks during the warmest portion of the day. Even small slides can sweep backcountry travelers over cliffs, carry them down very steep sustained couloirs or bury them in terrain traps. Monitor conditions for increasing wet snow avalanche hazard and avoid avalanche prone terrain after snow surfaces become too soft.

    Weak layers of faceted snow persist in the snowpack and are slowly becoming less reactive. Some potential may remain for backcountry travelers to trigger deep persistent slab avalanches on these problem layers. These dangerous slides are more likely to be triggered by a snowmobiler or a cornice drop during the warmest portion of the day and could occur on slopes that have been previously tracked. These low probability high consequence slides could be 3 to 5 feet deep and cause serious injury or death.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Skies will be mostly clear though Monday. Temperatures will drop into the upper teens to low 20’s overnight and rise into the 30’s during the day. Light winds will be backing from the north and east to the west and north. A lack of storms and repeated melt freeze cycles have created a mostly stable snowpack. Snow surfaces will be frozen in the morning and soften during the day. In all areas the wet snow avalanche hazard will increase during the warmest portion of the day. The general avalanche hazard is expected to low in the Teton area. In the Greys River and Togwotee Pass areas, deep persistent slab avalanches that could be triggered by snowmobilers are unlikely but cannot be totally ruled out. The general avalanche hazard in those areas is expected to be moderate.
