Highlights

Numerous avalanches were triggered in adjacent forecast zones yesterday and will be possible to trigger today on steep slopes in the middle and upper elevations around a foot deep. Shaded N-NE aspects between 8,500'-9,500’ will be most likely. Avalanches can be triggered remotely from gentle terrain above, below, or beside steep slopes. Assess the snowpack and terrain carefully to avoid these avalanches.

    Weak layers formed during the extended drought in January became reactive yesterday as the overlying snow settled into a firm, cohesive slab. Avalanches will be most likely on shaded slopes around 35° or steeper, but could be triggered on other aspects and elevations. Due to the scattered distribution of weak layers, some slopes may appear stable while others are not.  Look for terrain previously wind loaded where the overlying slab is stiffer and easier to trigger. These soft slab avalanches will range from 6-18 inches deep. Avalanches could behave as wet slides due to increasing temperature and clearing skies today.

Friday the 13th

Avalanche conditions changed yesterday as warmer temperatures and solar radiation (clear skies) allowed the recent snow to settle into a firm, cohesive slab. Weak layers formed in January vary drastically across terrain with facets, surface hoar, and crusts all in the mix. Knowing exactly how these weak layers will behave prior to adding a firm overlying slab is difficult to predict. The avalanche activity yesterday paints a clear picture that these weak layers are reactive, especially on N-NE shaded aspects in the middle-upper elevations. There’s a higher amount of uncertainty of the reactivity across all aspects. Use caution as the snowpack adjusts. Dig down and perform quick stability tests and find small, inconsequential test slopes to gain an understanding of the persistent weak layers we are dealing with. Steep slopes over 35° should be assessed thoroughly before being ridden. Expect these weak layers to remain active without any significant changes in weather through the weekend.
