The general avalanche hazard will be low in the early morning hours and increase to moderate at the mid and lower elevations after significant softening of the snow surfaces has occurred. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully. If the snowpack is wet and unconsolidated, avoid steep terrain.
Wet slides are possible, especially during the warmest portion of the day. At the mid and lower elevations these slides could dig down into older snow layers on steep terrain features where rising temperatures create areas of unconsolidated, isothermal snow.
( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Moisture will surge north into Western Wyoming as the low moves into the Great Basin. On Wednesday skies will become overcast. Light snow may develop and favor the Greys River area and the Togwogtee and Union Pass areas. A couple inches of snow are possible at the higher elevations. Temperatures are forecast to fall into the upper teens and 20’s in the mountains and into the 20’s at the lower elevations. Daytime highs will be in the 30’s in the mountains and near 40 degrees in the valleys. Winds will be from the southwest at 5 to 15 miles per hour.Some pockets of slab up to two feet in depth may persist on the cooler aspects at the higher elevations in the Teton Range. The wet snow avalanche hazard will be dependent on how hard snow surfaces freeze overnight, especially at the lower elevations. Assuming snow surfaces freeze, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be low in the morning hours in all areas below an elevation of 9,000 feet. The hazard above that elevation is expected to be moderate in the Teton and Togwotee Pass forecast zones and low in the Greys River area.
