Regions: Jasper.

Keep your heads up folks. The weak snow pack and wind slabs will continue to dominate the forecast for the rest of the year.

Weather Forecast

Overnight temperatures are expecting to raise closer to zero through the forecast area. Light snow will continue overnight and through the day.

Snowpack Summary

Light precipitation over the last few days was not enough to alter the snowpack. It remains shallow and unsupportive. Wind slabs of various thicknesses continue to form in lee locations and there is a variably distributed deep persistent slab overlying weak basal layers of depth hoar, crusts, and facets.

Avalanche Summary

No highway patrol today. No new activity reported in the last 24 hrs.

Avalanche Problems

Deep Persistent Slabs

Triggering this layer could have severe consequences. Shallow locations are likely trigger spots and, everywhere should be considered shallow right now.
Be aware of the potential for full depth avalanches due to deeply buried weak layers.Avoid steep, open slopes.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 2 - 3

Wind Slabs

Check for freshly loaded spots where a pocket of this instability would exist. Ice climbers, be cautious of cross-loaded gullies and terrain traps
Be careful with wind loaded pockets. Be aware of wide variation in snowpack depthCaution in lee and cross-loaded terrain near ridge crests.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2
