Snowpack Summary

Melt-freeze crust on all aspects and elevations is weakening to disappearing with current steady warm temperatures and light rain. Northerly alpine aspects may still hold dry snow. Persistent facets and depth hoar near the bottom of the snowpack will remain a concern in shallow areas and northerly alpine aspects.

Avalanche Summary

No field patrol today and nothing reported. Freezing levels and temperatures are on a slow steady rise. If you add rain to this mix expect increasing avalanche activity.

Avalanche Problems

Loose Wet

Wet loose avalanches are generally subject to how much available surface snow is present, time of day, aspect and elevation. Depending on these variables, it can be possible at all elevations and aspects.

  • If triggered the loose wet sluffs may step down to deeper layers resulting in large avalanches.
  • Use extra caution on solar slopes or if the snow is moist or wet.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Wet Slabs

Caution is warranted if the day starts warm and progressively gets warmer. ANY slide of this nature is likely to be large and will entrain the remaining winter snowpack having severe consequences.

  • Daytime warming will weaken surface layers, plan your day around being back to the trailhead early.

Aspects: South East, South, South West, West, North West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1.5 - 3

Cornices

Cornices are unpredictable at any time of day in the spring. Their mass would likely trigger deeper instabilities on the slopes below.

  • Cornices become weak with daytime heating, so travel early on exposed slopes.
  • Pay attention to overhead hazards like cornices which could easily trigger deep slabs.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, North West.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 2 - 3.5
