The lower snowpack is well-settled and dense. Snowpack depths vary with elevation. Treeline depths average around 180 cm and the alpine may exceed 300 cm.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avalanche activity is unlikely when a thick melt-freeze crust is present on the snow surface.
  • A hard crust on the snow surface will help strengthen the snowpack, but may cause tough travel conditions.
