Avalanche problems

  • Wind Slabs

    • Alpine
    • Treeline
    • Below treeline
    Likelihood
    Unlikely - Possible
    Size
    1–2
The majority of the previous windslabs appear to be bonding well, but there is still the potential to trigger these slabs in steep, wind loaded features.
  • Cornices

    • Alpine
    • Treeline
    • Below treeline
    Likelihood
    Unlikely - Possible
    Size
    1–3
There are some big cornices out there becoming weaker with the recent warm temps up high - give them a wide berth and the respect they deserve. Several big avalanches resulting from cornice failure were observed in the Maligne Lake area today.
  • Loose Wet

    • Alpine
    • Treeline
    • Below treeline
    Likelihood
    Likely
    Size
    1–2
Lots of sloughing as a result of the warm temps and stronger sun. Plan to be off Southerly slopes before the heat of the day and avoid terrain traps where the snow has a chance to accumulate. Freezing levels were as high as 2400m today.
