Highlights

At the higher elevations skiers and riders could trigger small pockets of wind slab up to a foot in depth. Deep slab avalanches are still a concern for snowmobilers who climb steep avalanche prone slopes. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8,000 feet.

    Although the likelihood of triggered a deep hard slab avalanche is low, the consequences remain severe. These dangerous hard slab avalanches could be three to five feet deep and are most likely to be triggered by a snowmachine. Previous tracks may not be an indication of stability.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Snow shower activity is forecast to decrease as the low pressure system passes over the Continental Divide and moves east. Several inches of snowfall are possible in favored areas overnight. Some low clouds and light snow showers are likely over the mountains on Sunday. Temperatures will be slightly cooler. Winds will veer from the southwest to the northwest at speeds of 15 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the Togwotee Pass and Greys River areas where deep slab instabilities may still be a concern for snowmachines who climb steep avalanche prone slopes. Although the likelihood of triggering a dangerous hard slab avalanche is low, the consequences remain severe. In the Teton area new snow depths vary. At the higher elevations pockets of wind slab up to a foot in depth and loose snow sluffs could be triggered by skiers and riders and steep avalanche starting zones. These small slides could pose a hazard in cliff areas, steep couloirs and above terrain traps. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW, however areas of higher hazard may be found if overnight snowfall amounts exceed expectations.
