The snow surface is highly variable;  Surface hoar crystals and facets sit above a widespread surface crust that caps the snowpack. In the alpine some dry but wind-affected snow can be found.

The lower snowpack is well-settled and dense. Snowpack depths vary with elevation. Treeline depths average around 180 cm and the alpine may exceed 300 cm.
