Regions: Jasper.

The heat wave is over!  Heavy rain is expected on Friday.  This will trigger further avalanche activity.  What's on Netflix?

Weather Forecast

The heat wave ends!!  The freezing level is expected to drop below 3000 m on Friday afternoon along with 12 mm of rain.  The rain will turn to snow (5 cm) on Friday night.  Seasonal temperatures with showers expected through the weekend.

Snowpack Summary

Isothermal conditions exist well into the alpine even on North aspects due to prolonged +3500m freezing level.  No overnight recovery expected on Thursday night.  The persistent slab problem still exists on north facing alpine slopes.  Expect a very weak snowpack everywhere else.

Avalanche Summary

No recent observations however expecting continued loose wet and wet slab avalanches especially with forecasted rain on Friday.

Confidence

Avalanche Problems

Deep Persistent Slabs

This problem primarily remains on alpine slopes as much of the lower snowpack has either melted or is now isothermal.
Avoid all avalanche terrain.

Aspects: North, North East, East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 3 - 4

Loose Wet

Warm overnight temperatures, freezing levels up to 3300m and 12mm of rain will keep the snowpack warm.  Continued loose wet avalanches are expected on Friday.
Avoid all avalanche terrain.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Very Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Cornices

All cornices should be suspect for failure with continuing warm temperatures and rain on Friday.
Extra caution needed around cornices with current conditions.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2
