Regions: Jasper.

The winter snowpack has begun to develop. Expect wind and storm slab formation at higher elevations with incoming storms. Be prepared with all avalanche rescue equipment when traveling in the mountains.

Snowpack Summary

Expect a significant change in snow condition when traveling from treeline to alpine. The early season snowpack at higher elevations is deeper than the seasonal norm. For more information on early season conditions visit avalanche.ca.

Avalanche Summary

Avalanche hazard exists, alpine travel should be taken with caution. In mid-September Visitor Safety responded to a significant avalanche involvement on Mount Athabasca due to early season avalanche condition. Thinly bridged crevasses and new loading over glacier ice and gullies have proven to be accident sites in years past.
