Avalanche Summary

Last Friday, two size 2 dry loose avalanches were reported in Telkwa Pass on north aspects in the alpine.

Looking forward to Monday, fresh wind slabs may form throughout the day in the alpine and treeline with the arrival of new snow and wind.

If you do go into the backcountry, consider submitting a Mountain Information Network report.

Snowpack Summary

New snow will accumulate throughout the day, likely overlying a crust from recent warm temperatures. In open areas above treeline, southwest winds may form fresh wind slabs in lee terrain features.

The middle and lower snowpack are seemingly well-bonded, but observations have been limited.

The snowpack has an average depth of 50 cm at treeline and 80-150 cm in the alpine. Snow depth tapers rapidly below treeline.

Weather Summary

Sunday night

Mostly cloudy with isolated flurries, trace accumulation, southwest alpine wind 20 to 40 km/h, treeline temperature -1 C.

Monday

Cloudy with snow turning to rain below 1000 m, 2 to 10 cm of new snow accumulation, southwest alpine wind 20 to 40 km/h, treeline temperature -1 C.

Tuesday

Cloudy with flurries, up to 5 cm of accumulation, west alpine wind 20 to 50 km/h, treeline temperature -1 C.

Wednesday

A mix of sun and cloud with isolated flurries, south alpine wind 15 to 30 km/h, treeline temperature -2 C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind affected terrain.
  • Early season avalanches at any elevation have the potential to be particularly dangerous due to obstacles that are exposed or just below the surface.
  • Make observations and assess conditions continually as you travel.
