Regions: Jasper.

Extremely cold temperatures (-25, forecasted high for the Icefields) is the most significant hazard to the hardy back-country traveler today.

Weather Forecast

Cold air from the Yukon floods into our region as a arctic high pressure system builds. Cold easterly winds and clear skies will remain in place most of the week. For more details: Avalanche Canada's, Mountain Weather Forecast.

Snowpack Summary

30cm of low density snow fell since Saturday in the ice fields area, less in Maligne and around the three valley confluence. This layer is sitting on a variety of surfaces depending on elevation and aspect and seems to be bonding well. Surface hoar may be sporadically preserved in some sheltered locations.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches observed or reported

Avalanche Problems

Loose Dry

Cooling temps will weaken the surface snow. Caution to ice climbers in confined and gully features.

  • The volume of sluffing could knock you over; choose your climb carefully and belay when exposed.
  • Be aware of party members below you that may be exposed to your sluffs.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 1.5

Wind Slabs

Ongoing moderate W winds redistributed 30cm new snow to lee features in open spaces.

  • Use caution in lee areas. Recent wind loading have created wind slabs.
  • Be cautious as you transition into wind affected terrain.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, North West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2
