Weather Forecast

10cm of snow is expected overnight. Cooler temperatures and clear skies are forecasted for the remainder of the week.

Snowpack Summary

Up to 50cm of new snow in the past 24h with moderate SW winds has resulted in new winds slabs in ALP lee features and widespread storm slabs. These overlie a variety of previous surfaces including hard slabs in the ALP and open TL, facets and isolated surface hoar at TL and BTL, and solar crust on steep solar aspects.

Avalanche Summary

Numerous loose dry and slab avalanches up to size 2 at all elevations and aspects.

Confidence

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

Recent HST is being distributed and forming wind slabs in the ALP and open TL.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Loose Dry

  • Avoid terrain traps, such as gullies, where the consequences of a small avalanche could be serious.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 1.5

Persistent Slabs

The Nov. 4 crust is down up to 90cm at tree line (2000m) and breaking down. Storm slabs may step down to this layer or even deeper to the basal instability creating large destructive avalanches.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3.5
