Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Soft slabs 10-50cm overlay a buried surface hoar layer. This layer is very touchy where the wind loading is greatest . Two skiers were caught in size 1-1.5 soft slab avalanches in the past 3 days. An ice climber had a close call with a cornice fall.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Deep Persistent Slabs

Increase loads with wind or new snow may awaken this instability. Size 2 surface slab avalanches may step down to this layer producing much larger avalanches.

Aspects: North, North East, East.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Unlikely

Expected Size: 2 - 4
