Regions: Jasper.

New snow and winds overnight will increase the avalanche danger on Tuesday. Investigate slopes before committing to features.

Wednesday

Cloudy with sunny periods and isolated flurries.

Snowpack Summary

Winds have created isolated windslab near ridge top & in exposed terrain above treeline. The 30cm of new snow is bonding well. Mid snowpack has settled well with a 2cm rain crust present below the recent snow up to 1950m. Another crust near the base of the snowpack continues to promote basal faceting adding to our deep persistent slab concerns

Avalanche Summary

No new activity observed on the Icefields Parkway.

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

New snow and south winds will build new windslab in lee and crossloaded features. Watch for hollow sounds and cracking. Consider testing smaller slopes before committing to larger features; windslabs could initiate deep layers.

  • Watch for stiffer feeling snow. Avoid areas that appear wind loaded.
  • Use caution in lee areas. Recent wind loading have created wind slabs.

Aspects: North, North East, East, West, North West.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1.5 - 2.5

Deep Persistent Slabs

Triggering this layer would be a high consequence event - cautious decisions and thorough investigation is necessary. More likely to trigger this layer in transitions from thin snowpack to deeper loaded pockets or terrain features.

  • Use caution in thin snowpack areas.
  • Use caution on open slopes and convex rolls

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 2 - 3.5
