Minimal freeze overnight at tree line and below as we approach the 'All Melt, No Freeze' Spring conditions scenario, as the freezing level rise to 3000m on Thursday.

Weather Forecast

Thursday is forecasted to be mainly cloudy with a chance of snow flurries or rain. The freezing level will remain at 1800m Wednesday night and will rise up to 3000m on Thursday. Wind will be 20-60km/hr from the South West. For more details, see the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Snowpack Summary

Poor overnight crust recovery, weak crusts on all aspects up to 2000m. Crusts at higher elevations will gradually break down with daytime warming. 10-20cm of settled dry snow in high Northerly terrain. Isolated pockets of wind slab may exist in the alpine.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanche activity observed or reported for the past few days.

Avalanche Problems

Loose Wet

With a poor overnight crust recovery and a freezing level up to 3000m on Thursday, expect wet loose activity on all aspects but high Northerly terrain.

  • Use caution on solar slopes if the snow is moist or wet.
  • Avoid slopes when the solar radiation is strong, especially if they have large cornices overhead.

Aspects: South East, South, South West, West.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Wet Slabs

As the snowpack warms there is potentially for large and deep avalanches. Plan to be off large terrain features before it gets warm, as uncertainty exists about this problem.

  • If triggered loose wet sloughs may step down to deeper layers resulting in larger avalanches.
  • Use extra caution on solar slopes if the snow is moist or wet.

Aspects: South East, South, South West, West.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 2 - 3.5
