Highlights

Unstable conditions continue to pose a threat to backcountry travelers in avalanche terrain. Saturday, a snowmobiler triggered a slide on Sheep Pass in the Salt River Range. On Friday, a slab avalanche fully buried one snowmobiler and partially buried another also in the Salt River Range. Similar events are likely today and could result in serious injury or death. Current conditions require restraint. Excellent terrain evaluation skills are essential for safe travel in avalanche country today.

    DANGEROUS unstable slabs up to four feet in depth rest on buried layers of weak, faceted snow. These slabs can be easily triggered by people who venture onto or beneath steep slopes and could release naturally. Avalanches will become more likely later in the day on slopes with sustained sunshine. Some steep slopes may be crossed multiple times before a weak spot is encountered and the slope fails.
