Highlights

New soft slabs will begin to form on leeward aspects at the upper elevations. Some potential may also persist at the higher elevations for larger triggers like high marking snowmobilers or multiple snowmobiles on the same slope to trigger deep slab avalanches on very steep avalanche prone slopes. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8,500 feet.

    West to southwest winds will begin to create now soft slabs six to 12 inches deep along the leeward aspects of the higher ridge crests. These new shallow surface slabs could be human triggered on steep avalanche prone slopes with fresh deposits of wind blown snow.

    At the higher elevations weak faceted snow lies upon a buried crust near the base of the snowpack. Some potential may persist for humans to trigger deep hard slab avalanches up to four feet in depth on this buried weak layer in steep bowls and gullies.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Snow is expected to develop overnight and be pretty steady until midday and then taper off to very light snow. Temperatures will drop into the single digits overnight and rise into the teens during the day. Southwest winds will veer towards the west at speeds of 15 to 25 miles per hour.At the upper elevations the west to southwest winds will begin to form shallow pockets of new soft slab on leeward aspects. The general avalanche hazard in the Teton Area is expected to be LOW in the morning and could increase to MODERATE at the higher elevations if significant snowfall occurs and is accompanied by strong winds. The general avalanche hazard in the Continental Divide/Togwotee Pass and Southwest Trails/Greys River Area is expected to be MODERATE at the upper elevations. Some potential may persist in these areas for humans to trigger persistent slabs on a layer of faceted snow near the base of the snowpack.
