Salt River and Wyoming Ranges

The avalanche danger is Moderate in the upper elevations today. New snow and winds have formed slabs that may be sensitive to human triggers. These slabs will be 8-10" in depth and more sensitive on steeper slopes with firm and slick underlying bed surfaces. These slabs are not widespread but may be found in steep wind loaded terrain. Loose snow avalanches are also a concern on steep sustained slopes in the upper elevations. Below 8,500 feet avalanches are unlikely and the danger there is Low. Approach avalanche terrain cautiously today and be on the lookout for signs of unstable snow including recent avalanches, shooting cracks, and whoompfing. Travel one at a time in suspect areas, utilize islands of safety and carry and know how to use rescue gear.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Isolated snow showers will continue overnight with minimal accumulation expected. A trace to an inch of snow is possible in all three forecast areas. Winds will be light, in the 10-15 mph range out of all directions. A cold air mass that has moved its way into the central part of Wyoming will make its way west over the Continental Divide overnight. Temperatures at 8,000-9,000 feet will drop into the negative single digits overnight and only rise to the (positive) single digits during the day.While this storm progressed in a way that favors a quick improvement in stability, the possibility remains for human triggered wind slabs and dry loose avalanches in steep upper elevation terrain. It will be important to carefully assess the snowpack in this terrain prior to committing to a particular slope. In the upper elevations the danger will remain Moderate. In all other terrain avalanches will be unlikely and the avalanche danger will remain Low.
