Regions: Jasper.

Strong solar radiation will quickly and dramatically increase the hazard on any exposed slope. Be especially cautious around shallow areas, exposed rocks and be very aware of large overhead terrain and features above ice climbs.

Weather Forecast

Sunny and cold with a light to moderate north wind over the day on Saturday! Expect a beautiful day in the back-country!

Snowpack Summary

A sun-crust is present on solar aspects up to 2500m. A supportive mid pack consisting of rounded and facetted layers is bridging the weak depth hoar/facet layers that make up the lower snowpack.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches were observed or reported today.

Confidence

Timing or intensity of solar radiation is uncertain on Saturday

Avalanche Problems

Deep Persistent Slabs

Triggering this weakness will require a large load (such as a cornice) in areas of deeper snowpack.
Caution around convexities or areas with a thin or variable snowpack.Minimize exposure to sun exposed slopes when the solar radiation is strong.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Wind Slabs

Entrances or convexities with obvious wind effect are likely areas where you may find a shallow wind slab.
Be careful with wind loaded pockets. Be aware of wide variation in snowpack depth

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2
