Snowpack Summary

5-10cm of new snow sits over previously wind effected surface or sun/temperature crusts. Moderate Wind transport with 20-40km/h SW wind is developing a more widespread wind slab problem in the Alpine and in exposed features at tree line. A variety of crusts are present in upper snowpack at all elevations but mid snowpack is well consolidated.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanche activity observed on the Icefields Parkway today with limited visibility. Please consider submitting a MIN report if you observe any new activity.

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Increasing SW winds with 5-10cm of new new available for transport is slowly building wind slab in the alpine at in exposed features at tree line. Give these fresh wind slabs time to settle before steeping back into steeper lines up high.

  • Use caution in lee areas. Recent wind loading have created wind slabs.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, West, North West.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Loose Dry

This problem is specific to steep, wind sheltered terrain. Size of dry loose avalanches is expected to be small but it may be enough to knock you off your feet as new snow sits over a firm bed surface in most locations.

  • Be cautious of sluffing in steep terrain.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, North West.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 1.5
