Regions: Jasper.

Caution Ice climbers as we head into a cold snap, Ice can become brittle and more fragile. Loose dry avalanches can pose a significant hazard if caught in the wrong place at the wrong time

Weather Forecast

Progressive cooling overnight and continues through the week. For more details: Avalanche Canada's, Mountain Weather Forecast.

Snowpack Summary

30cm new since Saturday in the ice fields area. This is sitting on a variety of surfaces depending on elevation and aspect. Surface hoar may be preserved in sheltered locations. The snow seems to be bonding well to previous surfaces at all elevations.

Avalanche Summary

An unusual avalanche today in closed ski hill terrain on a persistent layer. Steep previously controlled skiable terrain, 2 full burials no injuries.

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Ongoing moderate W winds redistributed 30cm new snow to lee features in open spaces.

  • Be cautious as you transition into wind affected terrain.
  • Use caution in lee areas. Recent wind loading have created wind slabs.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, North West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Loose Dry

Cooling temps will weaken the surface snow. Caution to ice climbers in confined and gully features.

  • Be aware of party members below you that may be exposed to your sluffs.
  • The volume of sluffing could knock you over; choose your climb carefully and belay when exposed.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 1.5

Storm Slabs

Though proving less reactive to natural loads this interface has yet been tested much underfoot. Tread cautiously, coming cool temps should tighten the bond over the old snow.

  • If triggered the storm slabs may step down to deeper layers resulting in large avalanches.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2.5
