Problems

Wind Slabs

An icon showing Wind Slabs
Soft slabs 10-50cm overlay a buried surface hoar layer. A shift to winds from the NE may create slabs in areas that do not normally get high snow load. Today, a size 2 slab was observed on a convex roll at treeline on this layer.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South, South West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Possible

Expected Size

1 - 2

Deep Persistent Slabs

An icon showing Deep Persistent Slabs
Increased loads with wind or new snow may awaken this instability. A small loose avalanche stepped down to this layer on a cross loaded gully producing a size 2 avalanche with a crown depth ranging from 30 - 150cm.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Unlikely - Possible

Expected Size

2 - 4
