Good quality skiing can be found in sheltered below treeline areas that were not impacted by yesterday's strong winds.

Summary

Weather Forecast

A clearing and cooling trend is expected as a result of a high pressure system. Partly cloudy skies, light winds and no precipitation is forecasted.

Snowpack Summary

Strong to extreme winds have stripped snow from exposed terrain and fetch areas and resulted in wind slabs and wind affected snow in open terrain below treeline, at treeline and in the alpine. The midpack is supportive. Surface hoar is found down 40cm to 80cm in isolated sheltered locations.

Avalanche Summary

Numerous size 1 to size 2 wind slabs observed, mostly from west alpine aspects during previous 24h.

Problems

Wind Slabs

An icon showing Wind Slabs

Previous strong winds have resulted in wind slab formation in open terrain at all elevations. Look for wind slabs in non typical places lower in lee start zones and be wary of cross loading.

  • Avoid steep convexities or areas with a thin or variable snowpack.
  • Be aware of thin areas that may propogate to deeper instabilites.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Expected Size

1.5 - 2.5

Persistent Slabs

Use caution around thin to thick areas. Keep an eye out for surface hoar in isolated sheltered locations below treeline.

  • Dig down to find and test weak layers before committing to a line.
  • Avoid exposure to overhead avalanche terrain during periods of moderate to intense transport.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.
