Just a reminder! Make sure you have a reliable means of emergency communications and extra layers in your pack: even a small injury could quickly become life threatening in these cold temperatures!

Weather Forecast

Generally staying cold, a bit of light flurries expected for Wednesday as a high pressure ridge moves east and gives way to a trough. Cloudy with clear periods with overnight low, -15 °C.

Wednesday morning, expect sunny periods and isolated flurries in the afternoon with only a trace amount of new snow. Alpine temperatures: Low -15 °C, High -8 °C.

Snowpack Summary

Surface faceting continues with cooler temperatures. Previous winds have stripped snow from all exposed terrain creating hard wind slabs and wind affected snow in any open terrain. The mid-pack is supportive. Decomposing surface hoar is found down 40cm to 80cm in isolated sheltered locations.

Persistent Slabs

Persistent Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) in the middle to upper snowpack, when the bond to an underlying persistent weak layer breaks. Persistent layers include: surface hoar, depth hoar, near-surface facets, or faceted snow. Persistent weak layers can continue to produce avalanches for days, weeks or even months, making them especially dangerous and tricky. As additional snow and wind events build a thicker slab on top of the persistent weak layer, this avalanche problem may develop into a Deep Persistent Slab.
