Problems

Wind Slabs

An icon showing Wind Slabs
Soft slabs 10-50cm overlay a buried surface hoar layer. This layer will produce a natural avalanche cycle with more snow load. Avalanche control on 93 produced several size 2 soft slabs that started in the middle of the slope at treeline.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Possible

Expected Size

1 - 2

Deep Persistent Slabs

An icon showing Deep Persistent Slabs
Increased loads with wind or new snow may awaken this instability. Size 2 surface slab avalanches may step down to this layer producing much larger avalanches.

Aspects: North, North East, East.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood

Unlikely

Expected Size

2 - 4
