Problems

Deep Persistent Slabs

An icon showing Deep Persistent Slabs
The deep persistent slab can be triggered most easily where the snowpack is less than 100cm and wind stiffened. Snow depths are highly variable in the alpine. At and below 1,600m a 5cm rain crust down 15cm is adding increased stability.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South, South West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Possible - Likely

Expected Size

2 - 3

Storm Slabs

An icon showing Storm Slabs
Steep cross or lee winded slopes with steep convex roles are likely slab trigger zones. In the alpine the snowpack depth is highly variable. At treeline travel is good and the snowpack supportive.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood

Possible - Likely

Expected Size

2 - 3
