Highlights

Triggering an avalanche involving wind drifted snow is possible at the middle and upper elevations today. Slabs will be 1-2 feet thick and may be sensitive to the weight of a rider in very steep terrain. Recent avalanches, shooting cracks, and collapses are obvious signs of unstable snow. Move to lower angle terrain if these signs are present.

    Strong wind and new snow within the last 48 hours has formed soft slabs 1-2 feet deep in wind loaded terrain at the mid and upper elevations. Wind direction varied from southwest to northwest during slab formation. As a result, wind slabs may be found across a wide variety of aspects. The likelihood of triggering has decreased since yesterday, but will still be possible in very steep terrain today. Numerous human triggered wind slabs were reported in adjacent zones yesterday. Steer clear of steep terrain with evidence of recent wind loading.

    A widespread rain crust that formed on December 10th exists in the middle of the snowpack. Large avalanches have been observed at this interface within the last 10 days. Weak snow from November exists below this crust on shady, upper elevation slopes. Avalanches involving either layer are unlikely today, but cannot be ruled out completely given a large enough trigger. Surface avalanches and large groups stopping in one place could be enough to impact deeper layers. If triggered, slabs will be 2-4 feet thick.

Avalanche Discussion

A series of atmospheric rivers over the last ten days brought significant snowfall, very strong winds, and even rain to the region. 3-4 feet of snow containing 6-8 inches of water has fallen during this period! Starting yesterday, skies cleared, temperatures dropped, and winds decreased. The calm clear weather is bringing increased stability, but we are too close to the loading event to fully trust steeper terrain. Numerous human triggered wind slabs were reported in adjacent zones yesterday. These slabs are beginning to stabilize, but are not there yet. Multiple crusts exist in the middle of the snowpack and weak snow from November persists at the base. A very large avalanche involving these layers occurred within the last 36 hours in the Tetons. While observers noted a lack of large avalanche activity in the high peaks of the Salt River range yesterday, the snowpack structure is similar enough to the Tetons that this event is worth keeping in mind as you travel today. Stability will continue to improve in the coming days, but for now it is important to stay vigilant and practice safe travel habits despite the friendly weather.
