Snowpack Summary

Up to 20cm of new snow in the past 24 hours. This overlies a new rain crust from Nov 17. The snowpack is 55-85cm at treeline. The Nov. 4th rain crust exists up to 2600m depending on location, and is up to 50cm deep. Now buried, wind slabs in exposed terrain that sit on the Nov 4th crust recently continue to be reactive to large loads.

Avalanche Summary

On Monday a size 2 skier triggered wind slab avalanche above the Hilda Hostel at Parker Ridge failed down 70cm sending blocks of concrete like snow into the trees. Recent report of a size 2 skier triggered wind slab in the alpine on a east aspect wind loaded feature.

Confidence

Due to the number and quality of field observations

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Up to 20cm of new snow with moderate winds at ridge top may have produced windslabs in the immediate lee at ridge tops.

  • Be careful with wind loaded pockets while approaching and climbing ice routes.
  • Use caution in lee areas. Recent wind loading have created wind slabs.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, North West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Loose Dry

Cool temps, winds and recent snowfall promoting loose dry avalanches in steep terrain.

  • Be cautious of sluffing in steep terrain.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 1.5

Persistent Slabs

Pockets of previous wind deposited snow overlies the Nov 4 rain crust and continues to be reactive to skier traffic and large loads such as explosives.

  • Pockets of persistent slabs linger on alpine lee features.

Aspects: North, North East, East, West, North West.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2.5
