Weak, sugary snow is buried 1-3 feet deep below the surface of the snow. At the upper elevations these weak layers could be buried in excess of 4 feet. These layers formed from cold, dry periods that occured in November and early December and are widespread. Avoid steep and rocky areas that are wind effected where triggering a slab is more likely. Be mindful of the sun and its influences on the snowpack today. Snow sufaces could become damp with the warm temperatures and high clouds today and free water could percolate down through the snowpack.
A layer of surface hoar is also present in the top 3 feet of the snowpack in many areas that are sheltered from dramatic winds. Dig down into the snowpack to find this thin grey stripe.
Avalanche paths that have slid earlier in the season are suspect as new slab depths increase with each successive snowfall.

This avalanche was triggered by a rider at Jack Hollow on a southeast aspect at 9,500 feet. It failed on weak snow in the lower half of the snowpack and was approx. 3 feet thick.
