Regions: Jasper.

Good skiing is being reported on sheltered slopes in the Parkers Ridge area.  Good time to get out and try the new skiis or ice tools that Santa brought you!

Weather Forecast

Seasonal temperatures until Saturday with flurries and light accumulation. Winds light from the West except stronger at higher elevations.  On Sunday, cold clear air invades.

Snowpack Summary

Wind slab forming on lee alpine ridge lines and open exposed tree line slopes.  Good bonding is apparent between the new snow and that beneath. The interface between the strong mid-pack and weaker basal facets is most susceptible to human triggering from shallow rocky areas.

Avalanche Summary

No avalanches reported today. We did, however, receive numerous calls this morning from local residents reporting sleigh and reindeer tracks on snow covered roof tops.

Avalanche Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind loading producing soft slabs on lee features at and above treeline.
Be cautious as you transition into wind affected terrain.Be careful with wind loaded pockets while approaching and climbing ice routes.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 2

Deep Persistent Slabs

This weak layer exists below a strong mid-pack at treeline and sub-alpine elevations. Large loads such as surface slides or cornice collapse could trigger this deep persistent weakness.
Carefully evaluate and use caution around thin snowpack areas.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3
