Quick report

Low danger is good time for getting out with new partners or checking out new areas.  We did both today:

  • We encountered isolated areas with wind-affected snow, but did not find reactive wind slabs.
  • We covered a lot of ground, but saw no obvious signs of instability.
  • We had great visibility, but saw no recent avalanches.
  • We did spot a glide crack on a southerly slope.
  • A fresh layer of surface hoar has formed in open terrain on all aspects and elevations.
  • In some areas the surface hoar formed directly on a recent rain crust.
  • Our pits revealed several layers of facets in the top 2 feet of the snowpack. These did not propagating in Extended Column Tests.
  • We saw some roller balls and point releases on steep southerly slopes during the afternoon.

I was glad were sledding and not skiing today.  The freezing rain crust at or near the surface made riding punchy in a couple spots but didn't spoil our day.

Saw some roller balls and point releases on steep south-facing slopes.
