    A likely Storm Slab problem will develop overnight Saturday into Sunday. This problem is likely to be widespread across both upper elevation bands. Look for cracking and whumphing within the new snow, alongside any recent avalanche activity as a key sign of instability.

    There is some uncertainty around how much new snow is forecast and how strong the wind speeds will be. If winds are stronger than forecast this problem will transition into a Wind Slab problem across the N 1/2.

None reported in the past 48 hours.

Current Snowpack Conditions

Up to 20cm of new snow is forecast for the Hutt Range on Saturday night. With 4mm of rain falling Saturday afternoon the expectation is that this bonds well and will be 'right side up'. Prior to this the snowpack resembled one you would see mid September or October with predominantly melt forms on the N 1/2 at all elevation bands. The Southerly aspects certainly transitioned into melt forms at the old snow surface but did have some cold snow remaining lower in the pack.

Mountain Weather

15-20cm forecast across the next 24 hours. Moderate Southerly winds are forecast to swing SW Sunday afternoon. FAFL down to 600m.

Sliding Danger

No sharps required on Sunday! Surfaces will be soft and no sliding hazard will be around.
