Lo esencial

A significant storm has hit the region, bringing up to 45cm of new snow above 1800 meters, with more forecast tomorrow. Natural avalanches are likely during the next 24 hours, and the avalanche hazard is now considerable.

Rapid snow loading accompanied by moderate to strong winds will result in storm slab avalanches.

  • Loose Dry

Expect loose dry avalanches to run far on the previous ice crusts.

Recent Avalanche Activity

No field observations, although we expect that there has been an avalanche cycle during the peak of the current storm.

Current Snowpack Conditions

Up to 45cm of new snow overlies a well-settled snowpack above 2100 meters on the western side of the park. Below 2100 meters, the new snow overlies a hard rain crust, which is the dominant layer in the snowpack. Below 1700 meters, the snowpack was previously below the threshold (not enough snow to trigger an avalanche).

Mountain Weather

Rain easing to showers in the morning, then clearing in the afternoon as fine spells increase. Snow to 800 metres before dawn.

Wind at 1000 metres

Southwesterly 35 km/h.

Wind at 2000 metres

Northwesterlies 40 km/h, turning southwesterly 50 km/h in the morning, dying out at night.

Freezing level

1100 metres, lowering to 600 metres in the evening.

Sliding Danger

New snow covers the main passes and tramping routes. Sliding into rock is a potential hazard. Ice axe and crampons should be part of your winter gear.

Forecast Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain about forecast snowfall amounts.
