A lot of snow has been lost in the past 24 hours due to warm temperatures and rain. Above 2100 meters, we expect pockets of wind-loaded snow and wind slabs to have formed. More snow and rain at lower elevations are forecast overnight, increasing the likelihood of loose wet avalanches.

Recent Avalanche Activity

Suspect a loose wet avalanche cycle to have occurred with rain and warm temperatures.

Current Snowpack Conditions

Warm temperatures and rain as high as 2100 meters have significantly reduced snow depth below 1900 meters, bringing it below the threshold. Above 2100 meters, new snow accompanied by strong winds has loaded the higher elevation slopes in the park.

Mountain Weather

Showers turning to rain this evening, possibly heavy. Snow to 1700 metres.

Sliding Danger

Snow now covers all the main passes and tramping routes. Sliding into rock is a potential hazard. Ice axe and crampons should be part of your winter gear.
