New wind slabs will likely form below ridgelines in the afternoon.  Steer around steep open slopes at upper elevations where you find freshly drifted snow.  Generally safe avalanche conditions are expected in the morning and at lower elevations.

    New snow along with moderate winds will move snow onto lee slopes near and above treeline later in the day.  Feel for wind-stiffened snow and observe blowing snow as you change aspects and climb in elevation.  Steer around steep open slopes where you find wind drifted snow to avoid triggering a shallow wind slab avalanche.  The avalanche danger will increase further Wednesday night as the storm intensifies. 

    Example: You may trigger a shallow wind slab below ridgelines by the end of day Wednesday.

Avalanche Discussion

Tuesday was a beautiful and warm day in the Olympics; the Hurricane Ridge weather station topped out at 49F with light winds.  We'll see a transition from our recent spring pattern of mild days and cool nights to a more winter-like pattern Wednesday through the weekend.  Keep an eye on upcoming storm totals and the avalanche danger as we head into the weekend. 

The snowpack is in great shape for early April with a deep snowpack and good coverage.  We did not receive any new observations on Tuesday.   Prior to the weekend, avalanche activity was minimal in the Hurricane Ridge area.

Spring Forecast Schedule:  NWAC will issue a danger rating every day for the Olympics beginning Friday, April 2nd  - Sunday, April 18th. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
