Kernpunkte

The principal avalanche concern on Friday will be Loose Wet activity.

Remain aware of the slopes above you and where you would end up if caught in a wet slide.

Be wary of confined areas (gullies etc) and avoid slopes exposed to terrain traps.

Lawinenprobleme

  • Loose Wet

    • Alle Höhenlagen
    Wahrscheinlichkeit
    Possible
    Größe
    1.5

The likelihood of Loose Wet avalanches will increase as the day warms up. These slides are most likely to occur on solar (North facing) aspects. If the surface is heating rapidly and losing cohesion it is time to move to a cooler aspect.

  • Wind Slabs

    • Alle Höhenlagen
    Wahrscheinlichkeit
    Possible
    Größe
    1.5

Recent Northerly winds may have transported snow and created pockets of Wind Slab. These slabs are most likely to be found on South facing slopes above about 1700m. Avoid ridge line entry points and other steep unsupported ground if you encounter stiff, wind deposited snow.

Recent Avalanche Activity

A cycle of Loose Wet avalanches has occurred across the region in recent days.

If you see evidence of avalanches in the back country please enter a Public Observation.

Current Snowpack Conditions

Some fresh snow at upper elevations 12th August (15 - 25cm) in the West and less further East. Rain to about 1850m on the 12th has left the pack moisture laden. Facets and depth hoar (weak, sugary forms) have been found in places. These pockets of questionable strength appear to be quite isolated and are most likely to exist on slopes facing East to South. You would be wise to do some investigation before committing to steep, shady terrain.

Mountain Weather

Friday - areas of morning cloud, otherwise fine. Light Westerly winds. Freezing level - 1800m.

Sliding Danger

Expect to encounter icy crusts below about 1850m especially in the morning. Keep in mind that the underlying pack remains shallow especially, at lower elevations. Rocks and icy areas may be lurking below a thin cover of snow.

Forecast Confidence

Moderate

  • We have a good understanding of the snowpack structure and confidence in the weather forecast.
  • We are uncertain about how the timing or intensity of solar radiation will affect the snowpack.
