The avalanche danger peaks Saturday night, but you'll want to keep your guard up on Sunday as well. It will be easy to trigger an avalanche on Sunday as rain primes recent snow for human-triggered and isolated natural avalanches. Avoid slopes 35 degrees and steeper with more than 6" of sticky, wet snow above a crust.

    Hurricane Ridge should have 9-12" of recent snow above the 1/6 crust by the time snow changes to rain. This transition should occur Saturday night, creating a wet avalanche cycle as rain destabilizes the snowpack. By Sunday, most of the natural avalanche activity has passed, but we're expecting wet, sticky snow to remain prone to human triggered avalanches. If you find dense, sticky, or saturated snow then avoid open slopes steeper than 35 degrees. The size of the avalanche depends upon how much snow fell above the recent crust. With a later transition to rain at upper elevations, some avalanches at these elevations could be large. At lower elevations, wet loose avalanches are expected to be limited by the meager snowpack.

Avalanche Discussion

We're expecting light rain showers that may transition back to snow at upper elevations. During any periods of active rainfall, expect the avalanche danger to rise. The rainfall also will re-expose many shallow early season obstacles such as rocks, roots, etc.

Winter's return was short-lived. Hurricane Ridge picked up around 6" of snow from Wednesday night through Thursday. An additional 5" on Saturday as the storm ramped up with strong winds creating large drifts on the road and forcing an early Hurricane Ridge closure. 

On Friday,  NPS staff found the new snow bonding well to the rain crust just below the new snow.  Rain from last week had penetrated the snowpack and there were no weak layers of concern.  There was not enough snow below 4500-5000' for reliable, continuous travel on snow in the Hurricane Ridge area.
