With rain in the forecast, wet snow avalanches may be found in steep high elevation terrain that still harbors dry snow. The warm weather over the past week has beaten back snow cover on steeper southerly aspects and at mid-elevations.  Think about early season hazards while traveling in the backcountry until we receive more snowfall.  

In areas where drier snow survived this warm, windy and most recently, cloudy week,  wet snow avalanches are possible in very steep terrain.  Snow may also slide off steep rock faces in areas where water can percolate through the snowpack to the ground.  It's important to plan your route and give yourself a buffer from overhead hazards, especially during periods of poor visibility. 

Take care as you descend in elevation and change course onto more southerly aspects, ground hazards that were covered a few weeks ago are poking out.  We'll see what the upcoming week brings in terms of new snow and avalanche problems.  

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.  

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
