Superbok

Pockets of wind slab in gully’s and on ledges from ~5cm of new snow and moderate, variable, overnight winds. The slabs were isolated and bonding well to the old surfaces (avalanche debris, ice chunks & boot tracks) in the gully/ on the climb itself. Many of the unsupported ledges on the sides of the gully were also loaded with pockets of recent wind slab that did not look inviting… We saw no new avalanches.

Avalanche Control on Mt Stephen-Dec 8

Avalanche control planned for Mt Stephen and Mt Bosworth on Dec 8. No skiing or climbing in these area. See bulletin for closure zones.

Guinness Stout

We had 1cm/hour of new snow over sections of the day with the storm blowing 3-4cm/hour with moderate winds between 12-2pm. Temperatures at -1 degrees C at the car in the afternoon. On Guinness Gully: 0-10cm of rapidly settling new snow with ~10cm of crunchy snow below. Between Guinness Gully and Stout: 15cm of new snow over a thin crust in places totaling 35cm height of snow. We were able to count 3 other parties and 1 soloist on the climb today.

High Test

The snow on Guinness Gully and on the approach to High Test / Guinness Stout has faceted out. Colder temperatures this morning with -10 at the car. We snow climbed through trees on climbers right to access the base of the route. Ice quality was variable. The bottom 10-15m of High Test was aerated, thin, and pro was hard to come by. There was no indication that this route had been climbed this year yet.

Mt Dennis and Field Avalanche Control Results

Good results on Mt Dennis and Field today. 11/15 shots produced avalanches generally on the deep persistent layer scrubbing to ground size 2.5-3. Of note for ice climbers, avalanches flowed over Pilsner (unformed so far this year) and in the path beside Carlsberg. Guinness Stout was bombed with no result.

Parks Canada Visitor Safety, Monday 13th February, 2023 3:50PM

Mt Field size 2.5

Fresh avalanche observed in one of the Mt Field highway avalanche paths. The debris looked wet and dirty, indicating a possible deep persistent slab.

Skiing on the Divide

Had a great day out picking our way along low-angled terrain to find some good turns. An ECT produced no results, despite the presence of all the layers mentioned in the bulletin (and then some). Regardless of the non-result we played it safe and enjoyed the fast snow on terrain below 30 degrees.

Field, BC Ice Route Observations

Beer routes looking lean. No real ice on Twisted. Super Boc didn’t look climbable. Main pillar on Cool Spring formed. Bottom of Massey’s/slabs looked really thin. Pilsner not touching down and a long way from being formed. Carlsberg has been climbed but stiff conditions. Guinness lower pitches looking very thin. With lean conditions and a small amount of fresh snow up on Mount Stephen/gully start zones we decided not to climb. We did climb Hamilton Falls near Emerald Lake. Good trail in and dry ice.

Carlsberg Column

The day was warm today with -6 degrees C in the morning and -3 around midday, calm winds, and scattered clouds. The snowpack was faceted to ground and we did not come across the persistent layer or wind slab underfoot. P1 isn't in and we walked around - thank you for the handline. P2 had a section with trickier early season ice, but it goes. P3 was wet and well protected. We also hiked up to Guinness and P1 isn't in. Field is still looking boney for this time of year. On our drive back, we were able to get eyes on Massey's - not in, Twisted - not in. Silk Tassels looks like there is a line that connects, but did not see avalanche debris at the base.

Field ice climbs

Ice conditions are thin and forming around Field with only about 15 cm in the valley bottom. No evidence of any avalanche activity yet, likely not enough snow yet but the snow that is there is facetting and becoming weak. The next storm should produce some avalanche action in these gullies.
