Quick Observation

We made an attempt to ski in Kootenay pass today. We were hoping to try and get above the freezing level. Unfortunately we found a significant breakable crust on the surface with soft snow underneath. Check the photo for details but it averaged at least 2cm thickness. It appeared to persist with elevation. We didnt make it very far before we decided to walk back. We never took our ski skins off since trying to ski in this seemed very dangerous. Would not recommend.

Avalanche Information

There was a significant Na cycle in the last 48 hours. Lots of evidence of loose wet avalanches on all aspects including North. And the deposits on the side of the highway from the Avalanche control from the last couple of days were pretty impressive.

Weather

Warm weather. It was snowing at less than 1 cm an hour when we were there.
