Incident

A group of 4 was climbing adjacent to the Cleaver on its South side to just below the steeper glacier roll that is climbed to reach Sapphire Col. The group planned on descending from that point, as the weather was poor, but as they neared their transition spot the slope above was remotely triggered from below. The avalanche was 20-50cm deep, 70m wide and ran for 150m. The last member of the group was the only person involved, was carried for ~50m and partially buried. They sustained a broken lower leg and lost some of their equipment. Parks Canada Visitor Safety responded and was able to land a helicopter close to the patient and fly them out to the ambulance. The attached photos have been edited to highlight the crown line and avalanche debris.
