Quick Observation
Dick Creek rules. We sledded up the south arm and found great, boot-deep blower snow sitting on a supportive crust. Temps hovered around -13°C for most of the day with light north winds, but it was easy to tuck into sheltered terrain. We spotted several fresh wind slab avalanches, mostly pulling out of steep, rocky terrain, so we gave those features plenty of space. The Feb 14 melt-freeze crust is present here as a 3–5 cm pencil-hard layer with small facets above and below, but it showed fairly strong bonding in our tests. Still, layers like this can be tricky. We kept good habits—spreading out in steep terrain, avoiding overhead hazard (especially rocky headwalls), and sticking to micro features and gullies—and ended up having a deadly day out there 🤙
