Quick Observation

With the high avalanche danger we rode some mellow meadows at Rolling Hills today. It snowed about 15 cm throughout the day, with very little wind. Riding conditions were good but lots of caution was needed to avoid the many hidden stumps just below the surface (total snowpack depth was slightly over 100 cm). We saw one size 2 wind slab avalanche immediately below a cornice on a east-facing treeline feature. It looked like it was a day old. We also observed a widespread crust layer about 40 cm deep with some weak snow below it, which corresponds with the weak layer in the current persistent slab avalanche problem.
